Humility - 3rd March 2018

You could be a straight A student but if your character namely honesty, respect for elders, humility, integrity, humble amongst peers fails you badly then you still have to work on things, ain't that right?
At the end of the day, our existence is not only to score in our exams although that is why everyone is in this tuition class.

Year 2016. One of our Tutor gave this advice to a student who was getting cocky and the student made disparaging remarks to his peers who did not score A for the exams.

He got the message. He did well for his PSLE. More importantly he learnt to stay HUMBLE.
There is no definitive textbooks which teaches you to be HUMBLE.


The hare and the tortoise story comes to mind.

Teacher - Student Convo - 2nd March 2018

Conversation went something like this


Pri 6 student : Teacher, I am lazy to revise.

Teacher : Are you lazy to eat?

Pri 6 student: Teacher, we are living things. We NEED to eat to survive.

Teacher : Make revising your NEED. You will NEED it for your survival in your academic pursuit. There must be a hunger to succeed.



Case closed. Student gave a quizzical look.

He will need a lot of pep talk.

This 30 sec exchange might / might not have helped but it did hit him.


He will improve, we have faith and we believe in his potential.

Dream career - 2nd March 2018

Throughout our years of teaching, a realisation hits us slowly that a student at Primary 4 level and above who has a dream career in mind normally does better in his / her exams.

This is not definitive neither it is the only variable which ensures his / her long term success.

What we feel is, it does show that the student has at least an objective of why he has to go to school, revise, sacrifice his play hours, complete his homework etc.

There are myriad of other reasons why a student would want to do well in his / her studies. Having a serious dream career could cultivate a child's motivation.

The greatest of sportsman, musician , painters started young.

Let's harness and inculcate our child to have a dream. It may be the start of something beautiful.

Past participle - 1st March 2018

It's quite a jolt for us as tutors when we get new sec 1 and sec 2 students and they have not an inkling of how to use or what is a past participle.

We would like to think these should have been established and enforced at primary school level especially before they reach pri 5.

Probably they might have forgotten. We have to think good thoughts.

This post is not meant to demean anyone. Far from it.

Having said that, it's now our responsibility to paper over the cracks and strengthen their language use.

We try our best to enforce the use of past participle during their formative years from Pri 1 - Pri 4 during our classes.

Creative writing class- 1st March 2018

We stopped conducting creative writing classes for 2 years. Parents have been making numerous emquiries and encouraging us to re start the classes.

We will make a firm decision after the March holidays. It all depends on availability of tutors.

On a side note, the introduction of a story leads and creates interest in your reader. Lise them or carry them there.

Pri 3 fractions - 1st March 2018

The topic of  fractions is an integral part of the psle. We expose our students to challenging questions at pri 3 and pri 4 level to eradicate any weaknesses and build a strong understanding of the topic.

This goes a long way in improving their word problem sum.

Our story - 1st March 2018

Year 2014.

The job of a tutor. Not only to disseminate information. Computers can do that. To inspire and make a child aspire.

Our student, a primary 5 student from the east had motivational issues. Showed a distinct lack of interest in studies. At the third class he wore a Man United jersey with Ronaldo 7. Game on.

We showed videos, told him anecdotes of how Ronaldo would never have achieved half of what he did without grit, determination and hunger to train and practice. To be the best. From Lisbon to United.

Slowly and surely it made an impression on him. The boy loved football and it was the spark we as tutors were waiting for.

Of course, we also reminded him of other reasons why one has to fulfil his / her academic potentials.

He made the progress we knew he could.

A story worth sharing.

It's the whole package.

Passion. Patience. Knowledge. Resposible.Dedication.

Hence the qualification of the tutor though important , it should not be the final yardstick to judge his / her ability to nurture a child.
