Today's tale - 18th May 2018

About a month ago, we had a parent who shared with us a common problem faced by parents who engaged tutors to teach their child at their residence. The issues were.

1. Within the first month, the tutor kept  constantly cancelling classes, changing day and time of classes. Reasons given were unacceptable. Example :- going out with friend.

Even the make up classes were changed .

2. Tutor was busy on her electronic gadget leaving student to do her own work.

3. Lacks professionalism in communicating with parent.

4. Asking for payment before classes commence when it was mutually agreed payment is to be made after every 4 classes.

We urge parents to do a check on the tutor's track record from current or previous students if and when possible.

An adult part time tutor who is in the working world or better still a full time tutor tend to project more professionalism.

Changes to day and time of classes are inevitable once In a while. Not every other week.

Motivation - 18th May 2018

In 2009 when I was in my infancy stage in the education industry I had the displeasure of witnessing a mum caning and giving her daughter a right old scolding in front of us for what she perceived as "insulting' grades.

The student was tearing and personally I knew she was humiliated. Me and another educator intervened.

Maybe the mum wanted to send a signal to us to push her child further. Who knows?

The girl was in primary 4 and she attained an 80 plus, Band 1 for her science paper. We knew she could do better. It was status quo for the student. She was consistent from her previous exam. The mum demanded a 95 mark.

Even if the student had committed various careless mistakes, to me a strong advice to eradicate such mistakes for future exams with a "well done" would have sufficed.  Just continue to work harder. Nothing wrong to aim for that 95. It was the process I questioned.

Maintaining high standard is one thing. Sowing the seed for a child to hate learning is another.

Sometimes I do wonder how the student is doing now.
I just hope that that episode in 2009 had not scarred her eternally to the extent of hating learning.

Learning is a marathon not a sprint.

Class size - 17th May 2018

The Learning Verve's classes are predominantly on a 1:5 Tutor to student ratio.

A smaller class size brings with it obvious advantages.

1. Teacher should have a more in depth knowledge of character profile of each student and their strength and weakness.

2. It would be logically easier to manage a class size of 5 as opposed to 10 - 15.

3.Teacher can spend more time for explanation and to tailor made lesson to suit a small group with similar learning ability.

4. Students feel more at ease opening up and asking question infront of 4 of their peers compared to 10 -15.

5. A small group aids in student assessment and evaluation.

Star Wars: Yoda's Wisest Words - 3rd March 2018

A powerful scene from Star Wars Empire Strikes Back released in 1980.

Keyword - Believe

Take note students.

Luke: "I don't believe it!"
Yoda: "That is why you failed."

Humility - 3rd March 2018

You could be a straight A student but if your character namely honesty, respect for elders, humility, integrity, humble amongst peers fails you badly then you still have to work on things, ain't that right?
At the end of the day, our existence is not only to score in our exams although that is why everyone is in this tuition class.

Year 2016. One of our Tutor gave this advice to a student who was getting cocky and the student made disparaging remarks to his peers who did not score A for the exams.

He got the message. He did well for his PSLE. More importantly he learnt to stay HUMBLE.
There is no definitive textbooks which teaches you to be HUMBLE.

The hare and the tortoise story comes to mind.

Teacher - Student Convo - 2nd March 2018

Conversation went something like this

Pri 6 student : Teacher, I am lazy to revise.

Teacher : Are you lazy to eat?
Pri 6 student: Teacher, we are living things. We NEED to eat to survive.

Teacher : Make revising your NEED. You will NEED it for your survival in your academic pursuit. There must be a hunger to succeed.

Case closed. Student gave a quizzical look.

He will need a lot of pep talk.

This 30 sec exchange might / might not have helped but it did hit him.

He will improve, we have faith and we believe in his potential.

Dream career - 2nd March 2018

Throughout our years of teaching, a realisation hits us slowly that a student at Primary 4 level and above who has a dream career in mind normally does better in his / her exams.

This is not definitive neither it is the only variable which ensures his / her long term success.

What we feel is, it does show that the student has at least an objective of why he has to go to school, revise, sacrifice his play hours, complete his homework etc.

There are myriad of other reasons why a student would want to do well in his / her studies. Having a serious dream career could cultivate a child's motivation.

The greatest of sportsman, musician , painters started young.

Let's harness and inculcate our child to have a dream. It may be the start of something beautiful.
